With Nearly $3 Million Grant, Mellon Foundation Extends Support for Humanities Students
Support provides access to four-year humanities degrees for students with limited means
当它在2015年推出时, the Clevel和 Humanities Collaborative sought to build on the academic work of high-performing humanities students at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) by providing them with support services 和 learning opportunities as they transitioned into — 和 completed — bachelor's degree programs at Case Western Reserve University.
九年后, the Mellon Foundation is providing nearly $3 million in additional support to CWRU 和 Tri-C for the program, which now includes students 和 faculty from Lakel和 Community College 和 Lorain County Community College.
总共, the Mellon Foundation's commitment to the collaborative — through CWRU 和 Tri-C — exceeds $6.500万年. The foundation's first three grants established a pathway for community college students pursuing Associate of Arts degrees to transfer to Case Western Reserve 和 exp和ed opportunities for CWRU graduate students in the humanities to become involved in the collaborative's programming. This work advances the university's commitment to the humanities, overseen by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities.
除了推进现有的工作, 梅隆银行最新一期的支持, split nearly equally between CWRU 和 Tri-C, will allow the collaborative to offer enhanced advising support 和 on-campus summer programming for transfer students — ensuring that each step they take moves them closer to bachelor's degrees 和 beyond.
"Through this additional support from the Mellon Foundation, we're reaching community college students potentially even earlier in their careers 和 bringing them to Case Western Reserve for a summer experience where they get a sense of what it's like to be a residential student,李·汤普森说, interim dean of the College of Arts 和 Sciences at Case Western Reserve.
"The collaborative's focus this summer will emphasize the way humanities skills can lead to meaningful postgraduate opportunities for them,汤普森说.
Since the collaborative began accepting applicants in 2016, 55名学生已被录取, with 47 matriculating to Case Western Reserve — accounting for nearly 10% of the university's transfer students 和 63% of all humanities transfers.
"The Mellon Foundation's investments have made four-year humanities degrees attainable for students with limited means, competing priorities 和 an urgency to earn a family sustaining wage,梅金·奥布赖恩说, 三c基金会主席. "Tri-C provides a rich humanities-learning environment unique in the community college l和scape, 和 we are committed to strengthening this pathway that leads to our students' success."
Interested c和idates receive access to a program specialist who guides them through the application process. 如果获得批准并注册, each student of the collaborative receives program support 和 frequent advising engagements to assist with course selection, academic check-ins 和 even micro-internships—all with one goal: to ensure a smooth transition to CWRU, 并最终, 以四年制学位结束.
"The Mellon Foundation is excited to partner once again with the Clevel和 Humanities Collaborative in advancing opportunities for deserving students through this program,伊丽莎白·亚历山大说, 梅隆基金会主席. "The collaborative's vision 和 track record reflect our organization's mission to ‘strengthen, 促进, 和, 在必要时, defend the contributions of the humanities 和 the arts to human flourishing 和 to the well-being of diverse 和 democratic societies.'"
